THE BLONDS F/W 2015

THE CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Design duo Phillipe and David Blond have always mesmerized us with their fabulous creations. This season the Blonds paid homage to directors Alejandro Jodorowsky and Stanley Kubrick. But it was Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” references that really caught our eye as the collection opened with strong black and white looks. Staples included their beautiful embellished bodysuits and catsuits accessorized with glamorous furs by Helen Yarmak (the bright orange one with multiple tails had us on the floor), as well as the most stupendous Christian Louboutin boots. We must note a dazzling “camouflage” jacket and pant comprised of amoebic shaped foil pieces, reminiscent of the great Paco Rabanne. Of course, no Blonds show goes without their trademark over-the-top big hair. And this season was no different, with beautiful 60’s inspired, waist length, back combed hair by Kien Hoang for Oribe. Makeup was once again provided by the genius of Kabuki for M.A.C. Pro Team, characterized by a sensational winged black and white eye and a soft pale pink lip. These frocks could never be considered ready-to-wear, but rather “in-your-face” stage wear for glittery superstars. And we’re just fine with that! Photography Alexander Thompson.

DYNAMIC STRUCTURE

Chromat designer Becca McCharen provocatively mesmerized us once again with her Fall/Winter 2015 collection at Milk Studios. Last season we were thoroughly impressed with the execution of her futuristic designs. This season was no different in that everything seemed meticulously and precisely made. But what we really loved was her design evolution. She took it to the next level and with true success. We were enamored with every seductive piece. Synthetic fabrics were used once again. And we were intrigued with the addition of latex from Tableaux Vivants. Our favorite look undeniably had to be the high-tech Chromat “plexi dress” which was constructed in a translucent TPU fabric and worn with satin lingerie underneath. However we were also extremely fascinated with the “White Swan” look, which was a synthetic hair bustier, worn with a Swarovski pentagram face mask. Incredible. The extremely modern appeal was enhanced with hair and make-up choices. Sleek hairstyles were provided by the incredible Amy Farid, with certain models donning spacey, structured ponytails encased in black latex. Make-up artist Yadim applied an exaggerated, heavy and shiny brow to all of the models creating a strong, almost menacing, look. Can it even get any better than this? YES. Just wait until next season. Photography Alexander Thompson.

DUCKIE BROWN F/W 2015

THE PASTEL WINTER

Brilliant menswear design duo Steven Cox and Daniel Silver, known as Duckie Brown, showed their Fall/Winter 2015 collection at Industria Studios in New York City. This season the designers chose not to have the dressing area hidden from attendees, thus lending chaotic voyeurism into the festivities, which is usually known to the rest of us as “backstage fashion.” It was a very interesting concept and it seemed to go over quite well with the fashion crowd. The set wasn’t the only unusual part of the show. The clothing took on a different stance as well. When thinking of fall/winter weather, light weight fabrics and pastel colors don’t usually come to mind. There was an abundance of fine silks seen both in blouses–yes, men’s blouses–and jackets. For example, there were low cut satin wrap tops and turtleneck blouses, lending that androgynous feel. We applaud that these talented designers took a not so traditional path in their elegant winter menswear collection. Staple Duckie pieces like sleek bombers and dramatic full cut trousers were also present. They closed the show with a beautiful grey military style trench coat. And we also loved that they used the classic white converse tennis shoe for every look. The men’s grooming seemed very minimal, with tousled center parts. This was definitely a standout collection and show, much different from the rest that we’ve seen so far this New York Fashion Week. Photography by Alexander Thompson.
