FUTURE FANTASTIC

Congratulations to threeASFOUR. Celebrating their ten year anniversary as a design trio, they sent an incredible intergalactic collection down the runway for New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016. Anybody who know’s anything about fashion or was part of the New York downtown scene back in the late 90’s, remembers their spacey, circular “donut” shaped bags that were seen at the coolest underground clubs and art parties. At that time they had four members and were named Asfour. Since those times they have grown into something that is even more avant-garde  astounding. They are the three extremely innovative designers behind threeASFOUR, known as Gabi Asfour, Angela Donhauser and Adi Gil. Museums from all over the world collect their pieces. And this year they won the highly coveted National Design Award for Fashion Design from Cooper Hewitt.

Everything in this collection was phenomenal. However, the most incredible pieces were the space-age creations that consisted of crystals, rocks and minerals on bodices. Heavy? Yes, but they were very much worth the weight! Our favorite from that series was the one shouldered dress adorned with crystal angular shards. And then, there was the fantastic 3-D printed digital white dress that opened the show, which was an elaborate art object unto itself. The more “basic” or wearable pieces were really no less incredible in their simplicity and modernness. This entire fantasy was set against fabulous 3-D projections by video artist Alex Czetwertynski. The future remains extremely bright for these visionary designers. And we look forward to another ten years. Photography Alexander Thompson. http://threeasfour.com

DUCKIE BROWN S/S 2016

LARGER THAN LIFE

Duckie Brown designers Daniel Silver and Steven Cox brought unique, exaggerated menswear to their collection for Spring/Summer 2016. Oversized is the key word in reference to the men’s high-waisted trousers, which were a size 48, tied with a ribbon on thin male model’s waists. Men’s tops consisted of loose, sheer organza fabrics. Suit jackets were made of draped voluminous fabrics. Our favorite look was a bright, attention grabbing yellow suit worn on model Tom Gaskin. A Duckie Brown collection is never boring. This is what we want to see on the runway during men’s fashion week, not basic jeans and t-shirts. Is this for the average American male? Perhaps not. But the design duo take chances and never seem to follow trends. And this we very much applaud. Photography by Alexander Thompson.

CARLOS CAMPOS S/S 2016

THE FORASTERO

Talented Honduras born menswear designer Carlos Campos presented his collection for Spring/Summer 2016 at Industria Studios on the opening day of the much hyped launch of Men’s Fashion Week New York. Staples for this season included topcoats, belted blazers, graphic tees, and the designer even threw in a sleeveless tuxedo jacket. The primarily green and navy collection felt both modern and luxurious, yet with a sprinkle of downtown edge. We asked the designer what his inspiration was this season. “For this spring season, I was inspired by the idea of the traveling nomad who wanders the depths of the forest. With the lush forest backdrop in mind, the collection layers sleek pieces in deep hunter greens and burnt auburn reds.” Photography Alexander Thompson.

FINGERS CROSSED S/S 2016

WHEN THE SUN TURNS OUT HIS LIGHT

“A ripple effect from Nick Cooper’s photography, designer Ryu Hayama turns out his most sentimental collection yet. Another daily mystique that is often taken for granted, shouldn’t we ignore the eclipse to admire the sunset? Slouchy linen in mustard, fluid crushed velveteen and soft-brushed cotton nylon are the medium of the message. What is more symbolic is the unexpected usage of chiffon and satin draped with sparks of embroidery. Admittedly the silhouettes of this season paints quite a romantic spectrum.” FINGERS CROSSED

KENNETH NING S/S 2016

SUBVERSIVE YOUTH CULTURE

“For Spring 2016, we continued to explore the balance between subversive youth culture and clean tailoring. Inspired by faraway desert lands, we found ourselves drawn to the vibrant energy and chaos of the bustling medina.

We immersed ourselves in the unfamiliar:  colorful spices set the palette, while patterned tapestries influenced the use of unexpected fabrics such as floral jacquards and lace. Graphic elements were extracted from traditional motifs. Ornate mandalas were reimagined as statement prints and applied using innovative techniques to disrupt classic suiting fabrics such as the pinstripe.

Proportions were pushed to create updated silhouettes with fitted shoulders and full sweeps. The end result is a bold statement of cultural art reinterpreted for modern sportswear and executed with expert tailoring, for the sartorial enthusiast with a youthful spirit.”
