REVENGE

For Fall/Winter 2016, New York City menswear designer Kenneth Ning dubbed his youthful collection “Revenge”. Shown during New York Fashion Week for men, the collection also included three women’s looks shown on female models. Standout pieces for men included oversized vests and jackets with exaggerated collars, zippers and grommets. The designer also showed a fabulous “revenge” print black and white suit, as well as a silk burgundy hooded zip-top, shown on model Erik van Gils. However, in our eyes, the showstoppers were the very graphic houndstooth overcoats, which were just out of this world. Accessories played a key role in this rebellious look, with male models sporting long dangling earrings and Dr. Martens shoes. The talented Ning stayed true to his vision of dressing the next generation, with his fresh, young and edgy outlook on clothing. Photography Alexander Thompson.  http://www.kennethning.com

CARLOS CAMPOS

F/W 2016

We first grew to appreciate the designs of Carlos Campos while covering his presentation last season. And for his Fall/Winter 2016 debut runway show, Campos did not disappoint. The designer gave us an abundance of looks in hues from a color palette of blue, cream and camel. Signature elements of the collection consisted of utilitarian and classic tailored menswear, with modern safari-like jackets, trenches and dramatic capes. The tan belted trench, worn by model Harry Curran, is every man’s perfect companion for travel. Brushed wools and cotton velveteen fabrics provided texture and luxury to the mix. And every man always needs a great white shirt in his closet, as well as a wide brimmed hat option in the cooler months. Campos wisely keeps his looks modern by showing tailored trousers with sneakers as the shoe option, which is pretty much how stylish New York men get around this gritty city. What really makes us fond of Carlos Campos designs is that they’re not only elegant in design, but also actually seem wearable and masculine at the same time. DEVON HALFNIGHT LEFLUFY F/W 2016

ETERNALLY YOUTH

Devon Halfnight Leflufy is the incredibly gifted, Antwerp based clothing designer who is well known for his very youthful and innovative creations. Leflufy began creating his line in 2013, and the fashion world was abuzz when his MFA collection from the very prestigous Royal Academy of Fine Arts was scooped up by uber-hip Opening Ceremony. His collection for Fall/Winter 2016 was  distinctively gender-fluid/unisex, shown during men’s fashion week. And it screamed everything about youth! In fact, “Eternal Youth” was not only printed on the collar of a leather jacket, but also on shoes and baseball caps. Standout pieces were characterized by recycled patchwork. There was an incredible mesh top and skirt that were constructed from iPhone cords. Our favorite piece, a beautifully constructed bright yellow over coat belted with iPhone cords, was worn by male model Charlie James. Also noteworthy were the quirky leather bags. Eternal Youth indeed. Photography Alexander Thompson. http://dhalfnight.com

STAMPD F/W 2016

MILITARY MENSWEAR

“New Soldier” was the name of the first ever New York Fashion Week presentation by Los Angeles based clothing label Stampd. Talented Creative Director Chris Stamp, who started the line back in 2011, has in a short time span collaborated with mega brands including the Gap and Puma. The well sought after Stampd is known for streetwear that is both luxurious and minimal. And the label stayed true to their mainly black and white palette this season. The twenty looks shown at the presentation were quite strong in their military inspiration. Our favorite looks included the bombers and M-65’s with straps, as well as the grey sweater with distressed elbows. But perhaps the best look was on model Ian Weglarz – a black trench coat with high collar, shoulder flap and dramatic back straps. This uniform, minimal way of dressing has always been a favorite of ours. Stampd has clearly made their stamp on modern menswear. Photography Alexander Thompson. http://www.stampd.com

FINGERS CROSSED S/S 2016

WHEN THE SUN TURNS OUT HIS LIGHT

“A ripple effect from Nick Cooper’s photography, designer Ryu Hayama turns out his most sentimental collection yet. Another daily mystique that is often taken for granted, shouldn’t we ignore the eclipse to admire the sunset? Slouchy linen in mustard, fluid crushed velveteen and soft-brushed cotton nylon are the medium of the message. What is more symbolic is the unexpected usage of chiffon and satin draped with sparks of embroidery. Admittedly the silhouettes of this season paints quite a romantic spectrum.” FINGERS CROSSED

KENNETH NING S/S 2016

SUBVERSIVE YOUTH CULTURE

“For Spring 2016, we continued to explore the balance between subversive youth culture and clean tailoring. Inspired by faraway desert lands, we found ourselves drawn to the vibrant energy and chaos of the bustling medina.

We immersed ourselves in the unfamiliar:  colorful spices set the palette, while patterned tapestries influenced the use of unexpected fabrics such as floral jacquards and lace. Graphic elements were extracted from traditional motifs. Ornate mandalas were reimagined as statement prints and applied using innovative techniques to disrupt classic suiting fabrics such as the pinstripe.

Proportions were pushed to create updated silhouettes with fitted shoulders and full sweeps. The end result is a bold statement of cultural art reinterpreted for modern sportswear and executed with expert tailoring, for the sartorial enthusiast with a youthful spirit.”

KENNETH NING
